Auburn Magazine

Fall 2020

From the Vice President

DEPENDING ON YOUR AGE, you may be familiar with the lyrics that Johnny Mercer penned in 1944. According to Wikipedia, “It is sung in the style of a sermon and explains that accentuating the positive is the key to happiness.” In describing his inspiration for the lyric, Mercer told the Pop Chronicles radio documentary, “[my] publicity agent…went to hear Father Divine and he had a sermon and his subject was ’you got to accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative.’ And I said ’Wow, that’s a colorful phrase!’”

You got to ac-cent-tchu-ate the positive
E-lim-i-nate the negative
And latch on to the affirmative
Don’t mess with Mr. In-Between
You got to spread joy up to the maximum
Bring gloom down to the minimum
And have faith, or pandemonium
Liable to walk upon the scene

I fondly remember my mom singing this song to me and my siblings when we started to get off track. As I reflect on the past 12 months and anticipate the future, I thought it was time to put this into practice and accentuate the many positives currently happening at Auburn University.

For starters, our university administrators, faculty and staff remain committed to the health and well-being of our students. Together, our campus community has remained flexible, positive and innovative to support its mission with the least amount of disruption.

Another recent positive was the creative, nontraditional commencement ceremonies held last December. Our newest alumni and their families celebrated in Jordan-Hare Stadium as each graduate processioned across the stage and had their name read while their image was projected onto the jumbotron. A special thanks to the 140 volunteers who worked selflessly to create such a special moment for them.

Auburn alumni continue to be a positive reflection on our university in the way they represent their alma mater. In this issue, you will see a mention of Auburn-based manufacturing company SiO2 Materials. According to a Jan. 3, 2021 Forbes article, they were selected for a 2020 Forbes Manufacturing Award for their patented technology, which incorporates a plastic vial with a pure glass coating to provide thermal and chemical stability. And in one of our features, you’ll learn how several alumni turned tragedy into success in 2020.

Finally, our faithful Auburn Club and Affiliate volunteers continue to be a positive force as they provide endless enthusiasm and loyalty to Auburn in their respective communities. Please visit alumni.auburn.edu/clubs for a list of special recognitions that were recently made during the 2021 Virtual Club Leadership Conference.

Please join me in accentuating the positives this year. I invite you to email me at gretchenvan@auburn.edu to share your ideas about the many positives at Auburn. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

War Eagle!
